Hmmm it takes a fair amount of time to identify the DVD.
But can you try with another DVD (like a Windows installation CD) to see if it’s recognized ? If the other DVD is recognized it means your Snow Leopard DVD is not properly recorded and you might try to burn it at lowest speed. If no other DVD is recognized, try using another external USB DVD drive - I killed my old Plextor drive in frustration and bought a LG Blu-Ray recorder after.
